In memory of Jimmy Buffett, who we sadly lost to Merkel Cell Carcinoma, and in support of several of our own members who have battled various forms of skin cancer, the Lowcountry Parrothead Club is committed to raising awareness about the importance of sunscreen and skin cancer prevention.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology (www.aad.org), everyone regardless of age, gender, or skin tone should use sunscreen daily.
Recommended Sunscreen Protection
The AAD recommends using sunscreen that provides:
Broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays
SPF 30 or higher
Water resistance
When Should You Use Sunscreen?
Every day, 365 days a year.
Even on cloudy, rainy, or cool days, harmful UV rays can penetrate through the clouds. Reflection from water, sand, and other surfaces can increase exposure even more.
Proper Sunscreen Application
Be sure to apply sunscreen to all exposed areas, including:
Neck
Ears
Lips
Tops of feet
Scalp or top of head
Apply sunscreen approximately 15 minutes before going outdoors and reapply at least every two hours or more frequently if swimming or sweating. Always follow the directions provided on the sunscreen label.
Additional Ways to Protect Yourself
Seek shade whenever possible
Wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses
Avoid tanning beds
Use extra caution near water and sand, where UV rays reflect more intensely

We also want to thank our partner, Harken Derm Sunscreen, for supporting sun safety awareness. Their products are designed for people who live, work, and play in the sun including boaters, surfers, fishermen, construction workers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
Our goal is simple: keep all Parrotheads, their families, and friends healthy, protected, and enjoying the outdoors for years to come.
FINS UP — and stay protected!
